Destination Development
Tanzania Eastern Circuit
Creating a lesser-known destination in Eastern Tanzania for an association of hotels dedicated to sustainability.
Project Overview
Project Rooted partnered with TATONA, an association of hotels located in Eastern Tanzania, to revitalize their collective presence and promote the region as a premier destination for sustainable travel.
By bridging the gap between individual hospitality leaders and national tourism bodies, we developed a cohesive strategy to highlight the Eastern Circuit’s unique cultural and natural heritage, moving away from mass tourism models toward a regenerative, community-centric approach.
Quick Facts
- Client/Partner: TATONA (Tanga Tourism Network Association)
- Location: Eastern Tanzania
- Timeline: Mid-January – Mid-March 2026
- Role: Lead Strategic Consultant & Project Developer
- Focus Areas: Sustainable Tourism, Destination Development, Stakeholder Engagement
- Key Stakeholders: Hotel owners, Tanzania Tourism Board (TTB), Regional Tourism Officers, local tour guides, and eco-conscious travelers.
The Starting Point
TATONA was established in 2009 to represent the interests of hospitality providers in the Eastern Circuit. However, following the global pandemic, the association had become somewhat dormant. In the meantime, the “Northern Circuit” and Zanzibar were experiencing the mounting pressures of mass tourism.
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism and the Tanzania Tourism Board recognized a critical need to redistribute tourist flow across the country. The Eastern Circuit was ready to welcome guests, but it lacked a unified marketing voice and the strategic support needed to compete on a national stage.
My Approach – From Idea to Implementation
1. Field Research & Discovery
I conducted an extensive roundtrip through the Eastern Circuit, visiting 28 hotels within the association. Through deep-dive interviews and site assessments, I identified the unique opportunities and systemic challenges facing the region.
2. Stakeholder Partnership
The primary strength of TATONA lies in its collective. During my fieldwork, I served as a bridge, reconnecting hotel owners who, despite being part of the same group, had often never met. This fostered a sense of shared identity and purpose.
3. Strategy Design
Synthesizing data from online questionnaires and stakeholder interviews, I developed a comprehensive Strategic Marketing Strategy for the Eastern Circuit and a tailored Advisory Report for the TATONA board.
4. Implementation & Advocacy
The findings and strategy were presented in person to the Tanzania Tourism Board (TTB). This meeting, attended by the majority of hotel owners, served as a formal launch for the region’s new strategic direction.
5. Future Planning
The project concluded with the delivery of a clear roadmap, providing TATONA with the actionable next steps required to maintain momentum and scale their impact.

Reflections
The most fulfilling aspect of this project was witnessing the shift from individual competition to collective power. When hotel owners and guides work together as a destination, their voices are louder and their impact on sustainability is far greater. Being able to present this grassroots energy to the Tanzanian Tourism Board, and seeing it so well received, was a powerful reminder that sustainable tourism development must be built from the ground up.
“Throughout her assignment, Aisling proved herself to be an outstanding adviser and an exceptionally supportive team player. Her positive attitude, enthusiasm, and ability to inspire others left a lasting impression on our members. Through her engagement, encouragement, and professional guidance, she helped strengthen the association and contributed to a remarkable increase in member participation and engagement, supporting TATONA in tripling its membership during this period.“
