Eco Homestay Development – Arusha
A community-based Eco Homestay developed in close collaboration with a local family, creating sustainable guest experiences rooted in culture, nature and everyday local life.
Project Overview
This project started from a natural connection. After staying at a newly opened homestay in Arusha, I instantly connected with the owners and their family. What began as a short stay turned into an invitation to live with the family and support them during the start-up phase of their new homestay.
At that time, the homestay consisted of one guest room. Their vision was to welcome guests in a personal, sustainable and culturally rooted way. Together, we shaped the early growth of the homestay in a way that respected their values and strengthened their original idea.

The Starting Point
When I first arrived, the homestay had just opened and was welcoming its first guests. The family had a strong hospitality spirit and a clear vision of what they wanted to build.
I was invited to support them during this early start-up phase, to help shape how their ideas could grow into a complete guest experience while keeping the heart of the homestay fully intact.
My Approach – From Idea to Implementation
1. Listening & Immersion
I lived with the family, joined in their daily rhythms and listened attentively to their goals, ideas and dreams. This rooted the work in trust and mutual understanding.
2. Co-Creation
We worked side by side to develop the eco homestay concept, defining guest experience, eco positioning and the vision for expansion.
3. Building & Activation
Together, we brought the vision to life by:
- Adding a second guest room, built as a traditional mud hut inspired by Maasai homes
- Designing and constructing a small on-site restaurant
- Creating a dedicated structure for cultural and nature-based activities
- Enriching the garden with flowers and plants so the buildings blended naturally into the landscape
4. Visibility & Sustainability
We strengthened the homestay’s presence through accommodation platforms, improved guest communication, and built relationships with tour operators to attract interested travellers.
Project Impact
- Growth from one initial guest room to multiple unique accommodations
- Construction of a fully functioning on-site restaurant
- Increase in guest numbers through focused eco-tourism positioning
- A transformed garden filled with flowers and native plants
- Strong connections with tour operators and booking platforms
- Recognition as a distinctive eco homestay experience in Arusha
Reflections
Living with the family and being welcomed into their home and daily life was a rare privilege. Supporting them during this start-up phase was not just professional, it was personal and deeply meaningful.
This experience shaped my way of working: slowly, respectfully and in collaboration with the people concerned. It showed me that the strongest projects grow from trust, shared vision and genuine cultural connection, which is the foundation of Project Rooted.
